So often we find gaps in our understanding and practice of yoga. We get confused, not just by the variety of techniques and philosophies, but also by the apparent gaps between alignment and flow, asana and pranayama, theory and practice.

Richard Freeman and Mary Taylor are coming to the Philippines hoping to bring us some clarity. Over a period of five days they’ll take us through the internal forms of alignment that are essential to postures flowing safely and intelligently on the thread of the breath. They’ll also introduce us to Sanskrit chanting and the pleasures of pranayama, and guide us to explore the foundational philosophies that form the context for yoga practice, focusing on a few of the essential texts, such as the Kena and Katha Upanisads, the Yoga Sutras, and the Bhagavad Gita.

The Essentials is one of Richard and Mary’s most popular courses. It’s designed for students new to Ashtanga Vinyasa as well as experienced practitioners wishing to refine their understanding of basic yoga philosophy and the interlinking aspects of the practice. This course takes place every year in Boulder, Colorado, typically selling out in minutes. For many, the Essentials serves as a stepping-stone to acceptance into the monthlong Teachers Intensive.
