Baba shows us how Jihva Bandha stretches the frenulum (the stringy tissue under the tongue), thereby pulling on the floor of the pharyngeal opening and even the upper portion of the neck. This encourages circulation in these areas. One should try to maintain the frenulum stretch for as long as possible, and can do about ten rounds as a preparation for pranayama.

Also called “tongue lock,” Jihva Bandha is also used as a substitute for Jalandara Bandha – or even in combination with it. The mouth would stay closed, and the root of tongue would press tightly against the soft palate, forming a perfect lock with the back of the pharyngeal wall.
